The Mystery of History is for all ages, but adaptations are helpful to maximize the curricullum for younger and older students. That’s what the next few pages are about. Before you go to them, here is some general information you might find helpful. The Mystery of History lessons are written on a 4th to 8th grade level. By “talking” directly to the students, the author’s writing style is casual enough to keep the attention of younger students and interesting enough to appeal to the older. “Older Student Only” notes are sporadically given for more detail or to address sensitive topics. Every lesson is thorough, accurate, and comprehensive – but not at the expense of being boring! In a personable way, the author strives to present the most exciting parts of history that are relevant and engaging. There is much to learn from world history, but if it’s dull and dry, then who really cares? Most children and adults have bad memories of textbooks. To the best of the author’s ability, The Mystery of History is different. Below is an overview chart of components designed to enhance the lessons of this curriculum. As you can see, the only required items include the text itself and atlases. Recommendations include the building of a timeline and the making of flashcards (also called Memory Cards.) Optional Materials are suggested for enrichment in the form of readers, films, games, and more. To answer your questions to the curriculum itself, please visit the appropriate pages for the age of your students.
*A major component of The Mystery of History curriculum is constant review through the use of student created timelines and flashcards. Depending on the talents, interests and budget of your family you may choose to create your own timeline and flashcards by hand or you may choose to incorporate pre-made items available at The Mystery of History Online Store. The Dateless Lesson Planner: A Workshop on Preventing AnarchyAfter years of frustration, veteran homeschooler Linda Hobar (author of The Mystery of History) found practical ways to liberate her lesson plans and prevent anarchy in her home. Literally. The secret lies in her “Dateless Lesson Planner” – a tool you will want to consider using in your own homeschool to keep students and teacher in better harmony.
